The good parts of a book may be only something a writer is lucky enough to overhear or it may be the wreck of his whole damn life—and one is as good as the other.

Ernest Hemingway.

I’m sure I was dreaming of adventures and far-off lands long before my Dad built a 40-foot steel yacht in the backyard.

Yet the years I spent gazing across the dusty rooftops of  a Whyalla suburb fuelled my love of writing.

Today, I feed that creativity by gazing into the night sky from the verandah or walking on the beach.

Or from the window of my study where black cockatoos and kookaburras squawk their own loud words.
